Austin Van 1971-3207
50 years ago, in March 1971, Shetland experienced some overnight frost. Next day the unsuspecting driver from the Bargain Centre was seen to overshoot the end of Victoria Pier having failed to stop his Austin Cambridge van after hitting some black ice. Eventually a sizeable crowd gathered to watch the car being lifted out of the sea by crane. Fortunately, Nazier Ahmed (20) escaped through the window and was pulled from the water by Russians from the Gordiy. "They took him on board for a hot shower and a change of clothes". He was back at the drapery business at the south end of Lerwick none the worse for wear.
